S V MAGAZINES

Background: Shoes & Views Magazine was founded in 1935 in Port Elizabeth, at that time the center of the footwear manufacturing industry in South Africa.

In 1997, its name was changed to S&V Magazine as part of a campaign to diversify out of footwear, while retaining a link with its long history.

In 2002, the magazine was divided into two parts, the one concentrating on footwear and leather goods, the other on leather. At the same time, the circulation was expanded into eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands, mainly on the leather side.

Editorial policy: S&V carries a mix of business, technical and fashion news. Editorial and advertising are strictly separated and are not dependent on each other.

Circulation: 

The magazine circulates in the following countries:
Southern Africa - South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. 
Eastern Africa - Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
Indian Ocean Islands - Madagascar and Mauritius.

There is a fixed circulation of 2,000 copies per issue of the magazine and calendar, of which approximately half are by subscription and half are complimentary issues, mainly to independent retailers. In addition, for each issue of the magazine there are supplementary mailing lists, linked to the features in that issue, which total around 300 copies. The total circulation per issue, therefore, is 2,300.

The Directory is mailed to subscribers only, and is also sold independently of the magazine. Total circulation is 1,500.

By area, 90% of the circulation is within South Africa.
By category, 65% of the circulation is to retail of one sort or another, while the balance is divided between the leather industry, suppliers to manufacturers, manufacturers and importers.

Publications: S&V produces six bi-monthly magazines, an annual directory and an annual trade fair calendar. It will also shortly begin publishing monthly e-mail export magazines to the UK.
