The Council for Leather Exports (CLE), sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India, has been serving the cause of promotion of exports of leather and leather products from India and has been acting as a bridge between the buyer and seller, since its inception in 1984. The services offered by the Council are as follows:

• Functioning as a registering authority for exporters of leather and leather products and issuing Registration-cum-Membership certificate as per provision contained in the Import and Export Policy and procedures.
  
  

• Collecting and disseminating information pertaining to the leather sector in India and Abroad in various areas like market trends, export import policy matters etc. 
  
  

• Promoting the Indian Leather Industry among international buyers by publishing suitable information / write-ups in foreign trade magazines.
  
  

• Sponsoring teams of member-exporters to attend various international exhibitions and fairs. 
  
  

• Organizing international leather fairs in India and inviting trade delegations and overseas buyers to the fairs in India. 
  
  

• Organizing buyer seller meets abroad. 
  
  

• Sponsoring the visit of Sales-cum-Study teams and delegations to major importing countries of leather and leather products. 
  
  

• Holding Seminars / Workshops on various subjects like Quality Management, policy issues, market development etc. 
  
  

• Arranging for the training of India technicians in reputed foreign institutes. 
  
  

• Inviting foreign experts to help upgrade the quality in production and marketing of Indian leather and leather products. 
  
  

• Organizing joint ventures / business collaborations / image building campaigns to boost exports. 
  
  

• Assisting exporters by keeping effective liaison with authorities in various departments like Customs, Licensing, Central Excise and RBI etc. 
  
  

• Liaising with the Government to high light the problems encountered by the exporters in policy and procedural issues. 
  
  

• Issuing certificate to member exporters for carrying samples, visa recommendation etc., during their visit to foreign countries. 
  
  

• Launching member exporter's profile on the website of the Council "leatherindia.org"  to popularize the activities of Indian Exporters and to generate trade enquiries. 
  
  

• CLE has been releasing various publications from time to time for the benefit of member-exporters. They include the following.

Leathers monthly magazine :
This magazine carries useful and update information on the developments in leather sector in India and abroad in various areas like product design and development, market trends, fashion and colour forecasts, trade opportunities, overseas trade fairs etc. and is circulated free-of-cost to all member- exporters of CLE apart from Indian Embassies, International leather fair organisers and trade associations abroad.

Directory of Members of CLE :
This directory is released annually and it has region-wise addresses of all member-exporters of the Council including merchants and manufacturers of finished leather, footwear and components, leather garments & leather goods spread all over India.

Leather Express :
This fort-nightly news letter carries information on current news developments in Indian leather sector and is circulated to all major foreign trade magazines for publication.

Facts and Figures of Exports of Leather and Leather Products :
This book is being released with a view of providing information on the region-wise-export trends of various product groups including finished leather, footwear and components, leather goods, leather garments, and saddlery and harness from India.

The CLE has its Head Office at Chennai and Regional Offices at New Delhi, Kanpur, Calcutta and Mumbai.
