The LINEAPELLE fair system - which includes ANTEPRIMA in Milan - is in a counter-trend. Both in September at the Milan pre-selection and in November at the big Bologna show there was an increase in visitors. In other words, the slump in the leather area worldwide is, on the one hand, smaller than in other sectors and, on the other, due to a slowdown in final demand which the offer (so active at the cited events) considers temporary.

At LINEAPELLE there were primarily fall-winter samples, which usually draw fewer visitors than the spring-summer ones (although just a few hundred less). This time, however, the opposite occurred, because from November 6th to 8th there were 29,736 visitors, or 4.8% more than in May. On the rise were visitors from Asia, Italy and Eastern Europe.

Comparisons of raw materials produced a stabilizing effect, on the one hand preventing a further price lowering and on the other warding off dangerous hikes. As we said, the market entered LINEAPELLE in trepidation and came out full of trust.

By the end of the year we estimate that the impact of the vastly negative economic picture will lead to a 10% downturn in our sector. The outcome of LINEAPELLE seems to forecast a heavy upturn in early 2002. This will probably be seen at ANTEPRIMA in Milan (March 25th and 26th) and in LINEAPELLE (Bologna, May 7th to 9th).

Calculations of turnover for the 50,000-odd companies in the global leather area indicate:

We estimate that 30% of this fundamental branch of the international economy comes every 6 months to Bologna.
