Innovative spectrum of new products for the leather industry

Leverkusen - Bayer Chemicals, a division of Bayer AG, will be presenting chemicals and technologies for the leather industry at Tanning Tech 2003. The focus this year will be on innovative products for the wet end and environment-friendly finishing.

Retingan® R8 is a new, anionic resin tanning material with low astringency and a selective filling effect for the retannage of all types of leather. In addition to improving the grain tightness and surface touch, it also has a good filling effect, especially in the loosely structured parts of the hide. Retingan® R8 gives leathers with a clear, pale color and good buffing and embossing properties.

Cismollan® UAL is a new liming auxiliary based on aliphatic amines for use in the beam house. This environment-friendly product can partly replace products normally used such as sodium sulfide and sodium hydrosulfide. It helps to open up the collagen fibers, giving full leathers with a round handle. Cismollan® UAL also preserves the substance in the belly and flank areas, thereby ensuring a more uniform hide Substance over the entire hide or skin and preventing loose grain. Because of its buffering effect and the improved solubility of the lime, Cismollan® UAL can also be used in the reliming.

Tanigan® PAK is a new, lightfast retanning material with a pronounced neutralizing and buffering effect. As the product is anionic, it is bound by chrome leather and other mineral-tanned leathers. Leathers retanned with Tanigan® PAK have a smooth grain and level, full dyeings.

Tanigan® LT-N liquid is a new, phenolic replacement tanning material for the retannage of chrome leather and the tannage of all types of raw material. Chrome leathers retanned with this product are very full and soft and have a pale color. It can be combined with all the conventional products used in the retannage such as neutralizing, resin, vegetable and polymer retanning materials. When used in vegetable tannage, Tanigan® LT-N liquid gives supple leathers with a pale color and a very fine grain.

Tanigan® LTS is a new, low-astringency, synthetic tanning material on a phenolic basis which is used primarily in the pretannage of vegetable leather, but can also be used for retanning chrome leather. When used as a pre-tanning material, it accelerates the penetration of the vegetable extract and gives leather with a uniform, pale color and a fine, soft grain. In the retannage of chrome leather, Tanigan® LTS can be combined with all the common retanning materials such as neutralizing agents and resin and polymer tanning materials. Chrome leather retanned with Tanigan® LTS is soft and has good fullness and a pale, uniform color.

Leukotan® 8090, the new, acrylate-based, synthetic polymer retanning material from Rohm and Haas, has the unique ability to fill the open, loosely structured parts of the hide. It gives full grain leathers a full, soft surface touch and a smooth, tight grain. In the case of corrected grain leathers, Leukotan® 8090 improves the buffing and dyeing properties. Because of its broad pH tolerance and its property profile, it is particularly suitable for car upholstery leathers and other soft leathers. It can also be combined with numerous plasticizing polymers and waterproofing systems. Representatives from Bayer's partner Rohm and Haas will also be at the stand at the fair to talk to visitors and answer any questions.

Bayer Chemicals will be highlighting the following four auxiliaries for aqueous finishing:

Euderm® Paste DO is a new auxiliary with a slight dulling effect which gives aqueous base coats a dry surface touch. It is suitable for all types of leather. Thanks to its leveling and filling effect, it improves the grading results, the natural appearance of full grain leather is preserved and strongly pigmented finish coats look less plasticky.

Two products designed specifically for car upholstery leather have been added to the Aquaderm® range. Aquaderm® Additive SF, a surface touch modifier for aqueous finishes, is used in final top coats to produce a soft and supple handle. Aquaderm® Matting Agent HPM is an aqueous, solvent-free product with a pronounced dulling effect which gives leathers of outstanding clarity and transparency. Finishes produced with Aquaderm® Matting Agent HPM have good flow, the viscosity of the formulations remains stable and the leathers can be stacked without any problems.

With its Baygen® range, Bayer Chemicals continues to be the market leader in patent leather finishing. At its stand at the fair, the company will be presenting the latest trends for Summer 2004, which feature all kinds of loud colors and ultra-glossy neon shades. A new product has been added to the range for the winter months: Baygen® Hardener CF is an isocyanate-based crosslinking agent which noticeably improves the performance properties of patent leather even in winter. It gives excellent cold flex resistance and largely prevents cracking.
