Last October the 10th, Italy and Egypt have signed two important contracts for the establishment of the industrial leather district - "Robaiky Leather District" - at Badr El City, close to Cairo, between The General Organization for the Industrial and Mining Projects (IMC) of the Egyptian Ministry of Industry and Trade and Assomac Servizi Srl, the service department of the Italian Association of footwear, leather goods and tannery machine manufacturers
(ASSOMAC).
Thanks to two contracts signed by IMC President, Eng. Said Abdel Latif Othman and by Assomac Servizi srl Managing Director, Dr. Amilcare Baccini, the Italian part will supply technical assistance for the establishment of Robaiky Leather District at Badr El City, and for the creation and operation of the Technological Centre supporting the Egyptian private enterprises.
The two contracts are part of the widest Italian financing project of the district which, thanks to refunding, includes an allocation of about 21 million Euros. The first instalment of over half a million Euros will be allocated in the coming days, marking the official start of the project.

The new Industrial District at Badr El City, sited approximately 45 km far from Cairo on the Cairo-Suez line, is the Egyptian challenge to make the quality of the processed leathers and transformation products (shoes, leather goods, etc.) competitive on the international market. The Egyptian government expects that the tanneries located in Old Cairo area move to the new centre above all to try to solve the existing environmental problems.
The transfer will take place in three stages. The study of the Master Plan made by Assomac Servizi Srl foresees that every stage will be operative autonomously.
The first stage will enable the transfer of about 50 tanneries and includes the establishment of a first phase, suitably sized, of the waste water treatment plant and of the chrome recovering unit. They will be enlarged so as to bear the waste load coming from further 60-70 tanneries, from about 190 footwear factories and leather product manufacturing laboratories, from by-products processing units, maintenance laboratories, and from the service centre (restaurants, bars, post offices, etc.).
The three stages will be prepared over a six-year period, and the first earth moving and levelling activities, where the first stage will be built, are scheduled to begin as from December 1st.
The first phase of the Technological Centre for training, managerial assistance to enterprises, laboratories for quality control and product and water analysis, etc… is destined for the tanning sector, which will be the first to be operative in the new district.
